I mostly post about: animanga/fandom, my life (serious, tmi topics included) and rarely some sort of politics (just stuff i find here and there). this is basically my journal.

My hobbies are: reading & writing, listening to music, drawing, collecting, gaming.

My fandoms are: corpse party, indie rpg horror, vns, nu carnival and more will be mentioned in my posts. im a former rhythm game player (enstars, twst, hypmic) who loves horror and older media so that should generalise what i enjoy a bit more. i embrace cringe with open arms and am trying to unlearn shame.

I'm looking to meet people who: are weird and have big thoughts. i would love to find people who are willing to interact or enjoy what i post even if its passively. if youre a spiritual fictionkin, please interact too. i subscribe back and dont be afraid to comment.

My posting schedule tends to be: somewhat sporadic but im not inactive for too long.

When I add people, my dealbreakers are: terfs/transphobes/(trans)misogynists, right-wingers, transid, racists, zionists, pedos.

Before adding me, you should know: im quite a lenient person by nature. i dont care about shipcourse whatsoever because online discourse itself is a headache and nuance is always forgotten. people are weirdos in general. i also put a warning before a triggering topic via the cut function. i have fluctuating mental health and i am not a mentally healthy person. no minors.

Recent Reading: Glorious Exploits

Hello friends ヾ(•ω•`)o I feel like it's been a while! Today I finished Glorious Exploits by Irish author Ferdia Lennon. It turned out to be the perfect book to read after finishing my lectures on the Greek and Persian wars, because it takes place in Syracuse during the Peloponnesian War (I caught that reference to the Athenian silver mines!)

The book is written in a contemporary Irish dialect, which put a lot of reviewers off. However, I think it works well for making the language accessible and readable to a modern audience in the sense that reading it, we can immediately tell who is likely educated, who is not, who is being casual, who is being disingenuous, etc. As long as you're prepared for it, I don't think it causes much disruption.

The audiobook is narrated by the author himself, which was fun. It's always great to hear an author's own take on their work. For instance, the way Lampo says "good morning," both to the Spartan guards and the Athenian prisoners of war at the start of the book. This could have been a nothing exchange, but the obnoxious way Lennon says that "good morning" tells us almost right away that Lampo is a guy who delights in being a thorn in others' sides and a guy who thinks he's hilarious

The plot of the story is simple: Gelon, Lampo's childhood best friend, decides they're going to put on a Euripides play with the Athenian prisoners, because the Athenians are the only ones who know enough of the script to pull it off.

That's all. The story moves at a leisurely pace, with Lampo and Gelon working through various technical snags in this plan and trying to garner support in Syracuse for the idea (there's not much).

I think Lennon excels at showing characters who are sometimes disappointingly realistic. Gelon and Lampo are not heroes. They are not conscientious objectors to the war. They are not activists against the obvious abuse the Athenian prisoners of war are going through. They're just two poor dudes put out of work by the war, who sort of maybe kind of thing it's not the greatest thing in the world for the Athenians to be tortured or starved to death and possibly someone might want to do something about that, at some point.

Similarly, the Athenians were undoubtedly the aggressors in the war. They invaded Sicily, they burned other villages on the island to the ground, they fully intended to conquer Syracuse. They allegedly killed Syracusans who had already surrendered. But the book asks, when is enough enough? When have they been punished enough? When have the Syracusans gone from victims seeking justice to perpetrators seeking vengeance?

Lampo himself, the main protagonist, is a prime mixed bag. His humorous nature makes him come off a bit harmless, but he can be wildly insensitive, even mean, even to people he likes. He can swing rapidly from mood to mood. He's often focused on himself and his insecurities can make him lash out or give up too easily. And yet, it's Lampo, not Gelon, who has the first confrontation with Bitton, a man who roams the quarries beating Athenian prisoners of war to death at random to soothe his grief for his son who died in the war. It's Lampo who inserts himself between Bitton and some Athenian strangers to try to talk the man down. And it's Lampo who urges action at the secondary climax, Lampo who sets that entire plot point in motion when no one else in Syracuse seems to give a shit.

In a way that feels characteristic of Irish tales, Glorious Exploits does not shy away from the gross, unglamorous reality of its story and its characters. It doesn't try to dress anyone up in shining armor or sacrifice the dull reality for a romantic sheen. Yet in the muck and the mire, a shocking gleam of poetry emerges. The play starts off as a lark for Lampo, a silly, ridiculous thing he's doing to humor his melancholy friend, but gradually, it becomes important. And as it becomes important to him, it becomes important to the reader. The plot is slow, and a reader may find themselves wondering why they're bothering with all this--but for me, the later two climaxes of the book hit like gut punches.

I'm still chewing this one over, but I enjoyed it and I would read more from this author. It's not a story that will shock and wow you upfront, but the heart of it really hits if you stick with it.

Subscription/Access Policy: It's been awhile since I've been on here so I'm probably pretty good about mutual access and subscriptions as long as people are the same. I have filters on here that are probably utterly null and void, so will probably be an open book for at least most of it.

Main Fandoms:

Star Trek: pretty much all of them except maybe VOY since it's never been my thing. TOS, DS9 and LD are my top contenders. I cosplay Commander Pelia, girl!Booklet, and my ancient TOS OC, plus I'm attempting to dress as an Andorian this year.

Doctor Who: I've been a DW fan since 1978 when I came across it by accident on BBC 1 in a hotel room in Stratford. My Doctors are: 4, 5, 8, 9, 11 and 12. I've met every one from Jon Pertwee through Jodie Whittaker, including Richard E Grant. I'm sure (I will meet Ncuti Gatwa some day.) I've met nearly every companion going back to Carole Anne Ford and William Russell, and through Millie Gibson. My unicorn is Karen Gillian. I thought I'd finally been able to cross her off my list at NYCC last year, but wound up having to cancel all my plans due to health stuff. 😭 I co-writer THE book on DW fandom in the US, am Masquerade director at Gallifrey One and LI Who. I also cosplay as 13, an Osgood, several versions of Donna Noble, and Joy Almondo plus I have a variant 13 who is mash up of 13 and Sylvi from Loki.

MCU especially Thor, Jane Foster, Loki, Ant-Man, Shang Chi, Natasha Romanov, Alexei, Trevor Slattery, the Vision-Maximoff family, Agatha Harkness, Lilia Calderu, Kamala Khan & family, Fantastic Four, OG Guardians of the Galaxy, Peggy Carter, and Black Panther. I was a Marvel comics fan for years, and the MCU just makes me very happy overall.

Star Wars: I've been a fan since I saw the first one in the theater (6 times) as a 14 year old in 1977. The OT is still near and dear to me. I don't hate any of the films although Rise of Skywalker is dreadful. Andor was brilliant. !ñ?I am, however, obsessed with The Mandalorian and Din Grogu. I'm counting the days until I get to see my little green jelly bean again.

The Beatles: I've been a Beatles fan since I was a kid. I love them dearly. I have been obsessed with George Harrison for the past 50 years. He's my Grumpy Pisces Fish. I'm currently working on a book of essays about women influenced by them.

Critical Role: A good friend introduced me to The Legend of Vox Machina animated show some time after the second season aired on Prime. I enjoyed it, but promptly forgot the plot. Did a rewatch when S3 was released, then S3 and promptly forgot again. I never watched the live play show because why would I want to watch other people play D&D? How boring! I want to play myself. I knew the cast was coming to NYCC last year, but I wasn't that interested in meeting them. I knew they were doing a live show at Radio City Music Hall which was a wedding of two characters, one of which I was aware of thanks to some people doing a C2/Doctor Who cosplay mash up at Gallifrey years ago. I knew her name was Jester, she was a blue Tiefling, and people liked to cosplay her. Why would I want to go to get wedding? (Not that anyone asked me to go with) Then all of last year happened, and I had to cancel all my NYCC plans since I could barely walk due to multiple spinal surgeries over the summer.

(I'm getting to the point, I promise!) In November, The Mighty Nein started airing on Prime and the same CR obsessed friend promoted me to watch it. I grudgingly agreed to it. And within about 10 minutes of episode 1, I fell in love. It was like the D&D version of Guardians of the Galaxy for me. I got those characters. I fell in love with Jester and Fjord and Nott The Brave (no comma). I was blown away by episode 5. Once MN was over, I rewatched VM again...and hadn't remembered anything about it except for the characters and how pervy Scanlan was. I then started reading up on all the campaigns, watched the live wedding and cried, watched a few other one offs. My friend then pushed me to catch up on Campaign 4 during their holiday break, so I powered through 9 or 10 4-hour shows, and somewhere right after the overture, I fell in love with the entire Soldiers table. Then the Seekers table. And now the Schemers table. My friend and I now do watches "together" long distance every Thursday at 10 pm EST. Then talk a lot about theories etc. I've also developed crushes on basically the whole cast. Bi panic powers activate!

Two of the stories in Justice League Quarterly #6 are better recapped later: one’s another Global Guardians bit, and one’s a Blue Beetle story that ends a phase in his development we’ve only seen foreshadowed so far. The other two, we can get to right now! Unfortunately, they're both mysteries with flawed premises, leading to climaxes that misfire even if there's some pleasure to be found in the buildup.

They’re still better than the later Praxis arc, but…low bar. )
